The Road to Woodstock: A Makeshift City that Changed History

By |2020-03-13T21:02:41-06:00December 17th, 2015|Categories: Books, Likes, Posts|

“Woodstock is the biggest mass of people ever gathered together for anything other than war.” Sometimes an event alters the course of history and starts as just that - a humble festival and nothing more. No one saw it coming. It just happened. As a result, the world will never be the same. Though I am an avid music fan, I [...]

Amy Poehler’s Yes Please – Come for Laughs, Stay for Wisdom

By |2020-03-13T21:05:14-06:00October 23rd, 2015|Categories: Books, Likes, Posts|

"Here’s the thing. Your career won’t take care of you. It won’t call you back or introduce you to its parents. Your career will openly flirt with other people while you are around. It will forget your birthday and wreck your car. Your career will blow you off if you call it too much. It’s never going to leave its [...]

Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects – First Book Precision

By |2020-03-13T21:06:14-06:00October 20th, 2015|Categories: Books, Likes, Posts|

Before we dive into my review of Gillian Flynn's Sharp Objects, let's look at the importance of the importance of the debut novel. "We all know each other’s secrets. And we all use them.” Debut novels. There's something special about them, isn't there? Granted, we've all read our fair share of first book flops. However, the debut novel often provides a unique view [...]

Beauty. It’s something that’s hiding everywhere we look. Maybe you don’t see it at first. Maybe you even go weeks with the ugliness of daily life being all that’s apparent. But it’s there, I promise. Forgive me. I’m attempting to redefine a word that is oft used around us to mean that which is sexy, attractive, or money-making. No. These things are [...]

Xenocide & Children of the Mind book reviews

By |2020-03-13T20:18:41-06:00December 22nd, 2011|Categories: Books, Likes, Posts|

I finally realized that "Speaker for the Dead," "Xenocide," and "Children of the Mind" were all a continuous story (at least in my head).  Obviously, they're not the same physical book... but Orson Scott Card continues the story from Speaker for the Dead through Xenocide and concludes it with Children of the Mind.  A lessor author could have crammed it [...]

Speaker for the Dead

By |2020-03-13T20:17:33-06:00September 26th, 2011|Categories: Books, Likes, Posts|

Honestly, if you can get past the overwhelming, religious archetypes in this book... you may be surprised by the delicately crafted undertones of sacrifice, love and truth.  In Orson Scott Card's second book of the Ender's Game series, he allows very little humor and ample reflection for the most serious situations. Speaker for the Dead dives into the post-Xenocide mind [...]

If you're looking for a great science fiction book that will keep you guessing until the end, allow me to recommend Ender's Game.  If you've read it before, read it again.  If you've never read it, pick up the whole "Ender Quartet" boxset at your local Barnes & Noble... 0r do as you please and grab it wherever including Amazon [...]
